BLAME THE PATRIOTS? NOT!

I used to coach 9-year olds playing hockey.  We had an awesome team.  Whenever we were up large, I put a leash on my best players and wouldn't allow them to score any more.  They had to pass; had to set some of the weaker players up for a goal.  Upon explanation, "good sportsmanship" I would explain.

They were nine year-olds!

So now we have the New England Patriots sending a sound message to the NFL.  Not exactly sure what that message is, but it sure is a message.

Running up the score.  So?  Aren't these guys professionals?

Let's look at other sports.  Up 7-1 in the NHL and I'm likely to play my third and fourth liners more.  And let me tell you something, they're going to bust their asses to try and score.  It's all about stats.  Same goes for NBA players.  No let up for the guys playing.   In the Major leagues, even subs aren't going to stop hitting homers.  it's all about stats.  Now, I'll grant you this: most likely up 10-0 in baseball the manager's got the red light on all base stealers.  But the hits just keep on coming.  Have a look at what Texas did to Baltimore in baseball during the summer.

If the Red Skins didn't like what the Pats were doing, they should have done something about it.  That is completely in their control.  Fourth down?  Stop them.  If you don't, why blame the Pats for executing.  Just look in the mirror.

I don't believe professional sports teams should ever take the gas off the pedal.  And it's not a matter of poor sportsmanship.  These aren't 9-year olds.  Or are they?

LEARNINGS FROM WEEK #8 IN THE NFL

Here's what we learned from this week's action:

- Brett Favre ain't bad.

- The Dolphins and Rams still are.

- Pats show no mercy.  We'll discuss this on a future blog writeup; I have an opinion (no kidding).

- That game in London, England was a waste of time.  Who cares if the NFL succeeds in Europe?  Too bad for the Giants and Fins who not only had to travel but had to endure shitty conditions.

- Cincy continues to disappoint, losing at home to the Steel.

- the Bills have a D that is playing awesome football.  And,

- the Jets have an O, no wait a minute, they don't.

- The Bears keep shooting themselves in the foot.  The Lions had been a lousy road team this season.  But the Bears let them escape with a W and buried their own chances while in the process.

- Jacksonville's D came up huge in beating Tampa.  Quarterback Quinn Gray made his first start.  I would love to see him go to the CFL and play for Edmonton.  Then, he'd be known as Quinn the Eskimo.

- Saints win third in a row and are right back in it.  Don't count them out just yet.

As for next week, don't know anyone not going to watch the AFC title game between NE and Indy.

MLB SELLS SOUL TO THE FOX-Y DEVIL

This really isn't a rant against FOX.  I like FOX.  But c'mon, it's Saturday afternoon.  So why play a game in Denver, in 40-degree temperatures when you could be playing in the afternoon.

Maybe it's my age.  I long for the days when I was a wee child in school, sneaking my transistor radio into class to listen to baseball classics played in the afternoon.

Or maybe it's my desire to see well played ball.  I play ball.  There's a huge difference in abilities when the temperature is in the seventies and when it's in the forties.  I want to see the best be able to play their best.

But no.  TV thinks they can sell more at night, thus MLB schedules World Series games on the weekend at night. 

For me?  Well if you think my lady is going to let me stay home on a Saturday night to watch baseball, especially after watching college football all afternoon, well, that just ain't gonna happen.  So, FOX and MLB, not only do you piss me off, you lose a customer for today's game.

QUOTE OF THE YOUNG NHL SEASON

A 19-year old rookie playing his first game in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs, scored his first goal of his career when he inadvertently deflected the puck into the net as he skated by goalie Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins. 

Jiri Tlusty ended up scoring a second goal, this one a pretty one, just 35-seconds later.

When asked about the first goal, the 19-year old native of the Czech Republic said:

"He shoot to my ass and I little bit feel it, but I don't say nothing."

My play on the Rockies last night was purely a value play.  You've got a team with its Ace on the mound, on an incredible winning streak and getting more than two-to-one.  You can't play Boston.  So the play, if you were going to make one, was on Colorado.  Smart gambling play.  Loser.  Thankfully I won the big wager of night on the Capitals and even Florida helped the purse last night.  That was a strange line.  The Flyers should have been huge favorites.  They weren't.  Spockian eye brow raised.  Winner.  More ice action and game #2 of WS tonight.

A great night on the pond more than off-set a lousy night on the grid iron.  Won with my largest wager of the young NHL season so far.  Also, picked up a nice scalp situation yesterday.  Those I can't post because everyone has different books.  But it was on the Salami where one book had the total at over +135, while the other had it at under -105.  Love those situations where the only limit on your winning is the limit in your account.  I hit it hard but cleared out one of my accounts, which I now need to fund.  A small pain in the ass to make some easy dough.  Hockey only tonight.

HERE'S WHAT WE LEARNED FROM WEEK #7

After watching some great finishes yesterday and last night, what did we learn:

- I text my kid in college the following: "are your Dolphins ever going to win a game this year?"  To which he responds: "are the Pats ever going to lose one?"  Touche.

- Looky, looky, who's in first place in the AFC West.  Well, none other than the KC Chiefs at a stunning 4-3.  All about their D.  Don't believe me?  Even Miami and the Jets have scored more.  102 points in 7 games.  Wow.

- Impressed by the way the Bills handled the Ravens yesterday.  More impressed by the fact that their incredible loss to Dallas on that Monday nighter didn't kill them.  Guarantee the week off helped their psyche big time.

- Was that Pennington's last game for the Jets?  Hey, he didn't do all that bad, throwing for 272 yards.  But did you see the before-he-was-ready snap while in shot gun.  The only thing missing was him doubling over because the ball hit him where it hurts.  Hilarious and a good summation for Jets season so far.

- What the H was Coach Whisenhunt thinking on that two point conversion try?  Dumb it down man, dumb it down.  This team has never been a winner.  Don't complicate matters.

- There's such a thing as scoring too quickly.  See that Texan comeback yesterday?  Wow.  Except they gave Tennessee too long to march enough yards up field to kick a game winner.  Some things you just can't control.

- Cowboys got back on track.  Very difficult to do things back-to-back.  Peterson rushed only 12 times for 63-yards.  Romo 31 for 39.  After getting spanked last weekend at home by NE, Big D gets an easy win.

- Giants have now reeled off 5 in a row and are playing great.  Next week it's versus the hapless Fins.  BUT, the game will be played in London England.  WTF?  Stupid NFL.

- Bears have a great win in Philly yesterday with Griese leading a late charge.  That put the Bears in the hunt and the Eagles in big time trouble.  Not only are they 2-4, but to make matters worse, there are three teams ahead of them in the standings and two of those are the aforementioned Boys and Giants.

- C'mon, let's have a game between the Rams and the Dolphins.

Did relatively well in the NFL yesterday, going 5-3-1.  The Jets final TD and two-pointer helped the cause, creating a push on a wager I made early in the week.  For those of you who purchase on a weekly basis, best off if you do so early in the week and get my picks as I make them.  That one was sent out early.  Most of you probably didn't get the 7.  Had the Broncos big on the Sunday night game, which was huge.  Went 1-1 on the ice and that was fine as I stated I was hopeful of the split and put some change in my pocket.  And the wager on Cleveland was all about value: game #7, Dice-K on mound and plus 163.  So much for value.  Some puck tonight and the Monday nighter.
